Creating an Inclusive Classroom

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's teaching - adaptive physical education minor teaches you how to tailor a physical education curriculum so that it is appropriate for children with disabilities and/or special needs in a regular education setting. This minor is only for those who are already certified as a physical education teacher and are looking to obtain an additional license in adaptive physical education.

Curriculum within the adaptive physical education program will help you to better understand children with disabilities and learn how to appropriately plan and implement instructional strategies. Coursework and projects explore additional topics within the field, including techniques and best practices related to teaching, coaching, evaluating, coordinating resources, consulting, collaborating, and advocating.

Completion of the minor qualifies you for a K-12 license and prepares you to assess individuals, recommend programs, and modify learning environments accordingly. Graduates go on to make a positive impact in the lives of students with disabilities and best meet their physical, motor, personal, social, and learning needs.

  1. Obtaining a Wisconsin Teaching License PRIOR to applying for a teaching license in another state is usually helpful and strongly recommended.
  2. "Meets requirements" means that a student is eligible for a license with stipulations, typically for 1-3 years, in that state. The stipulations are likely to be specific testing requirements and/or competency through a course or examination. In some instances, additional stipulations might be added.
  3. Licensure grade levels vary from state to state. Students who are eligible for a specific grade range in Wisconsin may be licensed for a narrower grade range in another state. Each state determines grade ranges for licensing differently.

Professional development is a key focus of the minor. Prior to graduation, you will be required to complete approximately 120 hours in practicum experiences working with children with special needs, providing you with real, practical experience. Practica will also introduce you to working with teachers, parents, and administrations in an effort to help all children reach their full potential.

Graduates with a minor in teaching - adaptive physical education are qualified for career paths they may have never even considered! While most adaptive physical educators are employed in K-12 school systems, some grads are also working in early childhood education centers, assisted living residences, community parks, and outdoor recreation programs.

A theory and lab course examining exceptionalities as they apply to the physical education environment. Study includes legal implications, IEPs, individual differences, assessment principles, modification of tasks and learning environments, and field experiences (30 hours).

A theory and lab course examining the appropriate assessment tools and procedures for special populations in physical education.

KINS 493

Practicum in Adapted Physical Education

A lab course applying principles of programming and assessment in the special physical education environment. Field experience a minimum of 90 hours is required.
